# How to Identify Primary vs Sub-Members

### Before you begin (Prerequisites)

* **Permissions**: You must be an **Administrator**, **Supervisor**, **Manager**, **Support**, or **Account Rep**. See: [How to Manage Users and Permissions](/products/control-panel-overview/admin-overview/manage-roles-permissions.md).
* **Family Memberships**: At least one membership program must have family/dependent memberships enabled. See: [How to Add a Sub-Member](/products/control-panel-overview/membership-management-hub/add-sub-member.md).

### Instructions

#### In the Members Dashboard

1. Use the **Search** icon (magnifying glass) in the top navigation bar. Type the member's name or email and select their profile.

> Alternatively, navigate to [**MEMBERS > View Members**](https://control.peoplevine.com/membership/0/members), search by member name or member ID, and click **APPLY**.

> **Note (Pro Dash):** Navigate to **REWARD > Members > All Members**.

3. The View Members table shows: Photo, Member's Name, Membership ID, Membership, Joined, Renewal Date. **Edit**, **View**, and **Check In** are action buttons, not data columns. There is no "Member Type" column — the table does not indicate primary vs sub-member.
4. To determine whether a member is Primary or a Sub-Member, navigate to the member's CRM profile (click the member's name) > **Memberships** section > **Sub Member** section. The UI does not display a sub-member tag on the membership card itself.

#### In Reports (Export Method)

To pull a report that pairs sub-members to their primary members:

1. Navigate to [**MEMBERS > View Members**](https://control.peoplevine.com/membership/0/members).

> **Note (Pro Dash):** Navigate to **REWARD > Members > All Members**.

2. Filter by status (e.g., **Active**) and program as needed, then click **EXPORT DATA**.
3. In the export settings, toggle on these two fields:
   * **membership card no** (`membership_card_no`)
   * **parent membership card no** (`primary_membership_card_no`)
4. Download the export. The fields work as follows:

| Field                        | Primary Member                  | Sub-Member                             |
| ---------------------------- | ------------------------------- | -------------------------------------- |
| `membership_card_no`         | Unique card number (e.g., 1234) | Unique card number (e.g., 5678)        |
| `primary_membership_card_no` | Always **0**                    | The primary's card number (e.g., 1234) |

5. Use the `primary_membership_card_no` column to pair sub-member records to their primary member. Filter for `primary_membership_card_no` = 0 to see only primary members, or filter for non-zero values to see only sub-members.

> **Note**: Sub-member status is dictated by the primary member. If the primary member's card goes to Failed or Cancelled, all linked sub-members lose access.

### Best Practice

When investigating billing or access issues, always start with the primary member's record. The primary member controls billing and access for all linked sub-members.

### What Happens Next

* **Next step**: To add a new sub-member, see: [How to Add a Sub-Member](/products/control-panel-overview/membership-management-hub/add-sub-member.md). To swap primary and sub-member roles, see: [How to Swap a Sub-Member for a Primary Member](/products/control-panel-overview/membership-management-hub/swap-sub-member-primary.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.peoplevine.com/products/control-panel-overview/membership-management-hub/identify-primary-sub-members.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
