# How to Add a Sub-Member (Family/Dependent)

### Before you begin (Prerequisites)

* **Permissions**: You must be an **Administrator**, **Supervisor**, **Manager**, **Support**, or **Account Rep**. See: [How to Manage Users and Permissions](/products/control-panel-overview/admin-overview/manage-roles-permissions.md).
* **Admin Setup**: The membership program must have sub-members enabled. See: [How to Enable Family Memberships](/products/control-panel-overview/membership-setup-overview/enable-family-memberships.md).
* **Primary Member**: The primary member must have an active membership.

### Instructions

1. Use the **Search** icon (magnifying glass) in the top navigation bar. Type the primary member's name or email and select their profile.

> Alternatively, navigate to [**CRM > View People**](https://control.peoplevine.com/customers), search by name or email, click **APPLY**, and click the member's **Name**.

> **Note (Pro Dash):** Navigate to **CRM > People > View People**.

3. Scroll to the **Memberships** section.
4. Click **View** on the primary member's membership card to open the card detail page.
5. In the **Assign a Parent Card** section, click **Assign Person** under **Add a Sub Member**.
6. Search for the dependent by name or email, or create a new CRM profile first. See: [How to Create a CRM Profile](/products/control-panel-overview/membership-management-hub/create-profile.md).
7. Complete the enrollment details for the sub-member. The sub-member receives their own membership card linked to the primary.

> **Note**: To let the sub-member log in independently, set their **Member Portal Access** during enrollment — enter a **Username** (typically their email) and a **Password**, or check **E-mail password reset link** to have the system send them a setup link.

> **Note**: Sub-member status is dictated by the primary member's status. If the primary member's card goes to Failed or Cancelled, sub-members lose access.

> **Note**: Once a member is enrolled as a sub-member, the "Sub Member" tag on their membership card persists even after cancellation. If you need to re-enroll the same person into the **same** membership program, archive the old card first — otherwise the system may conflict with the existing tag. If re-enrolling into a **different** program, no action needed.

> **Note**: To consolidate sub-member billing under the primary member, enable the **Parent House Account** checkbox on each sub-member's membership card. See: [How Family Billing Works](/products/control-panel-overview/invoices-house-account-overview/family-billing.md) for the full setup and invoice rollup details.

### Best Practice

Sub-members can add and manage their own payment method for event tickets, F\&B, spa, etc. The primary billing member pays for membership dues and initiation fee. To consolidate sub-member house account charges onto the primary member's sweep, enable the **Parent House Account** checkbox on each sub-member's card.

### What Happens Next

* **On the member side**: The sub-member receives their own digital membership card and can log in to the Member Portal with their own credentials. Check-in works independently.
* **Next step**: [How to Send a Member Their Digital Membership Card](/products/control-panel-overview/membership-management-hub/send-membership-card.md) to send the sub-member their card.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.peoplevine.com/products/control-panel-overview/membership-management-hub/add-sub-member.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
